Which entrance exam do you need after Class 12?

For many students in Jammu and Kashmir, the admission process after Class 12 can be confusing.

There is NEET for medicine, JEE for engineering, CUET-UG for many university programmes, JKBOPEE for several professional courses in J&K, IAT for IISERs, NEST for NISER and other entrance exams for specific fields.

The difficult part is knowing which exam is actually required for the course you want to study.

For example, a student interested in agriculture may need to look at the admission process of SKUAST-K, while someone applying for a regular undergraduate programme may need CUET-UG or a university-specific admission route. A student interested in scientific research can look at IAT or NEST, while someone interested in law may need CLAT or AILET.

This guide brings together the major entrance exams and admission routes that students from Jammu and Kashmir may come across after Class 12.

1. JKBOPEE

Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examinations

JKBOPEE is the Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examinations. It is the government body responsible for conducting entrance examinations and managing admissions for several professional courses in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

For Class 12 students, JKBOPEE is particularly important for nursing, paramedical, allied-health and certain other professional programmes.

The exact courses and admission process can change from year to year, so students should always check the latest JKBOPEE information brochure.

Courses you may come across through JKBOPEE

Depending on the academic year and available seats, professional programmes can include:

  • B.Sc. Nursing
  • B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology
  • B.Sc. Radiography / Radiology-related programmes
  • B.Sc. Operation Theatre Technology
  • B.Sc. Anaesthesia Technology
  • B.Sc. Renal Dialysis Technology
  • B.Sc. Cardiac Care Technology
  • B.Sc. Respiratory Care Technology
  • B.Sc. Radiation Technology
  • B.Sc. Perfusion Technology
  • B.Sc. Medical Technology
  • B.Sc. Neuro Sciences Technology
  • Physiotherapy and other allied-health programmes

(Note: Admissions to major MBBS/BDS courses in Jammu and Kashmir  are handled nationally via NEET-UG, though counselling/nomination roles for state quotas often interact with local authorities).

What about engineering?

For students who want to pursue B.E./B.Tech. in engineering colleges within Jammu and Kashmir, there is a separate J&K entrance route conducted by JKBOPEE.

For the 2026-27 academic session, JKBOPEE conducted the Jammu and Kashmir Common Entrance Test (CET) for B.E./B.Tech. Engineering Courses. Candidates who appeared in the examination and were included in the merit list could then participate in JKBOPEE’s online counselling and choose their preferred colleges and branches.

The 2026 JKCET engineering admission process covered government and private engineering institutions in the UT. Participating institutions included:

  • Government College of Engineering and Technology (GCET), Jammu
  • Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET), Jammu
  • MBS College of Engineering & Technology, Jammu
  • SSM College of Engineering, Pattan, Baramulla
  • Yogananda College of Engineering and Technology (YCET), Jammu
  • Bhargava College of Engineering and Technology, Samba

The participating institutions and available seats can change from year to year, so students should check the latest JKBOPEE seat matrix before applying.

(Note: Major national institutes located in J&K, such as NIT Srinagar, do not use JKCET; they accept admissions exclusively through the national-level JEE Main exam).

Why is JKBOPEE important for Kashmiri students?

If you are applying for a professional course in J&K, don’t assume that applying directly to a college is enough.

The process can involve:

Course → Eligibility → Entrance exam/score → JKBOPEE application → Counselling → Seat allotment

2. University of Kashmir Admissions

University of Kashmir entrance and admission routes

The University of Kashmir (KU) has more than one admission route for undergraduate programmes. Which route you need depends on the course, campus and type of programme.

For students in Kashmir, the three names you are most likely to come across are KUET, CUET-UG and JEE Main, but they are not interchangeable.

KUET: Kashmir University Entrance Test

The Kashmir University Entrance Test (KUET) is conducted by the University of Kashmir for admission to selected programmes.

For the 2026 academic session, KUET was used for several five-year Integrated Master’s and four-year undergraduate programmes. These included programmes such as Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Electronics, Energy Studies, Applied Geology and other programmes offered at different KU campuses. The University also used KUET for its five-year BA-LL.B programme.

For some programmes, CUET-UG is used

The University also has CUET and non-CUET admission routes for undergraduate programmes. Therefore, students should check the admission notification for the particular course instead of assuming that every KU programme requires KUET or CUET.

For engineering

For B.Tech programmes, JEE Main can be an important route. KU also conducts a separate admission process for certain B.Tech non-JEE seats.

For example, in 2026, KU’s B.Tech non-JEE admission notification stated that candidates with a valid JEE Main score would be given preference, followed by candidates who qualified KUET against available vacancies. If the number of eligible candidates was lower than the available seats, selection could be made on the basis of Class 12 marks.

What about colleges affiliated with the University of Kashmir?

The University of Kashmir is affiliated with a large number of colleges across Kashmir. For undergraduate admissions in these colleges, CUET-UG is used for applicable programmes, while seats that remain vacant may subsequently be filled through the merit-based process prescribed by the University.

The exact admission process can vary by course and academic year, so students should always check the latest admission notification before applying.

In simple terms

  • University of Kashmir: KUET or CUET-UG, depending on the course
  • B.Tech: JEE Main, with a non-JEE/KUET route for applicable vacant seats
  • Affiliated colleges: CUET-UG for applicable programmes, followed by merit-based admission for vacant seats where provided

So, before preparing for an entrance exam, first decide which course you want to pursue and then check which admission route applies to that course.

3. SKUAST-K University Entrance Test

Agriculture, horticulture, veterinary and allied sciences

The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) is one of the most important specialised university for students in Jammu and Kashmir.

If you are interested in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, veterinary sciences, fisheries, food technology, biotechnology or agricultural engineering, SKUAST-K should be on your list.

For several undergraduate programmes, the university conducts its own University Entrance Test (UET-UG).

In 2026, SKUAST-K conducted UET-UG for undergraduate degree programmes, with separate admission processes for some programmes.

Courses to explore

Depending on the programme and admission year, options can include:

  • B.V.Sc. & A.H.
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Sericulture
  • B.F.Sc.
  • B.Tech. Biotechnology
  • B.Tech. Food Technology
  • B.Tech. Dairy Technology
  • B.Tech. Agricultural Engineering
  • B.Tech. Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture

For the UET-UG, students with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) can take the PCB paper and apply for programmes such as B.V.Sc. & A.H., B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Sericulture, B.F.Sc. and B.Tech. Biotechnology, subject to the eligibility requirements of each programme. Students with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology (PCBM) have additional options, including programmes such as B.Tech. Food Technology and other technology-based courses where Mathematics is required.

Who should consider SKUAST-K?

If you enjoy:

Biology → agriculture, plants, animals, food, environment or biotechnology

or

Mathematics and technology → agricultural engineering, food technology or AI in agriculture

then SKUAST-K offers several interesting options beyond the usual NEET-JEE conversation.

4. SKUAST-Jammu Common Entrance Test

Agriculture, biotechnology, veterinary and allied sciences

The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-Jammu) is another important option for students from Jammu and Kashmir interested in agriculture and allied fields.

The university conducts its own SKUAST-J Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission to various undergraduate programmes. In 2026, the UG entrance test was held on 28 June, followed by university-level counselling and seat allotment.

Courses to explore

Depending on the programme and admission year, students can find options in areas such as:

  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry
  • B.Sc. Fisheries
  • B.Sc. Sericulture
  • B.Tech. Biotechnology
  • B.Tech. Dairy Technology
  • B.Tech. Agricultural Engineering
  • Other agriculture and allied programmes

The university’s 2026 admission material lists undergraduate programmes across areas including agriculture and horticulture, basic sciences, biotechnology, fisheries, forestry, sericulture, statistics and agricultural engineering.

For example, B.Tech. Biotechnology at SKUAST-Jammu has seats filled through the SKUAST-Jammu CET, with eligibility including 10+2 with science subjects and PCM/PCBM combinations as specified by the university.

Who should consider it?

Students interested in agriculture, plants, animals, biotechnology, food technology, forestry, fisheries or agricultural engineering should consider SKUAST-Jammu alongside SKUAST-K.

PCB, PCM and PCBM students can have different options, depending on the programme’s subject requirements.

SKUAST-K vs SKUAST-Jammu

Both universities are important for students in J&K, but they are separate universities with separate admission processes.

SKUAST-K → University Entrance Test (UET-UG) for applicable programmes

SKUAST-Jammu → SKUAST-J Common Entrance Test (CET-UG) for applicable programmes

So a student interested in agriculture or allied sciences should check both universities rather than assuming that the admission process is the same.

SKUAST-Jammu Website

5. CUET-UG

Common University Entrance Test for Undergraduate Programmes

CUET-UG is a national-level entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

For students from Jammu and Kashmir, CUET-UG can open the door to undergraduate programmes at participating universities across India, including universities in J&K and their affiliated colleges.

However, CUET-UG is not a universal entrance exam for every college and every course in Kashmir.

Some universities and institutions use their own entrance tests, merit-based admission or other national-level examinations.

Why should Kashmiri students know about CUET?

One CUET-UG score can be used to apply to multiple participating universities and their affiliated colleges subject to their individual eligibility and admission rules.

This can be particularly useful if you want to keep your options open beyond colleges in Kashmir.

What can you study?

Depending on the university, CUET-UG can be used for programmes in areas such as:

  • Science
  • Arts and humanities
  • Commerce
  • Economics
  • Social sciences
  • Computer applications
  • Management
  • Languages
  • Other undergraduate fields

The exact CUET subjects required depend on the university and course.

The important part

Don’t choose your CUET subjects first and your courses later.

Instead:

Choose courses you are interested in → check eligibility → check the university’s CUET subject requirements → select your CUET papers.

This can prevent a common mistake where a student takes the wrong CUET subject combination and later discovers that a desired course requires a different combination.

For students in Kashmir

Participating institutions and their admission rules change, so check the current CUET participating-university list and the individual university’s admission notice before applying.

Best for: Hospitality and hotel management
Typical stream: Eligibility varies by programme

NCHM official website

What about ICAR and agriculture?

Students interested in agriculture should be careful about old information on the internet.

Agricultural admissions can involve different routes depending on the institution, programme, quota and academic year. National-level agriculture admissions and university-level admissions should therefore be checked separately.

For a student from Kashmir, the first place to look is SKUAST-K, especially for programmes offered by the university itself.

Don’t assume that every agriculture course requires the same entrance examination.

SKUAST-K Admissions

Which exams should a Kashmiri student actually focus on?

You don’t need to appear for every entrance examination.

Start with the career or course you want.

If you want medicine

NEET-UG

If you want engineering

JEE Main → JEE Advanced if targeting IITs

If you want a regular degree in Kashmir or elsewhere

CUET-UG and/or the university’s own admission route

If you want nursing or allied healthcare in J&K

Check JKBOPEE and the current course-wise admission rules

If you want agriculture or allied sciences in Kashmir

SKUAST-K admission process

If you want scientific research

IAT → IISER
NEST → NISER / CEBS

If you want law

CLAT / AILET / university-specific route

If you want design

NID DAT / UCEED / NIFT

If you want architecture

NATA / JEE Paper 2, depending on the institution

If you want management after Class 12

IPMAT and other institute-specific examinations

One important mistake to avoid

Don’t choose an entrance exam first and then try to find a course that accepts it.

Do it the other way around.

Follow this order:

1. Decide what subjects or careers interest you

↓

2. Find the courses that lead there

↓

3. Shortlist universities and colleges

↓

4. Check their eligibility requirements

↓

5. Find out which entrance exam they accept

↓

6. Prepare and apply

For example, don’t simply decide:

“I’ll take CUET.”

Instead ask:

“I want to study B.Sc. Computer Science. Which universities offer it? What subjects do they require in Class 12? Do they accept CUET? Which CUET papers do I need?”

The same approach applies to NEET, JEE, IAT, NEST, CLAT and other examinations.

For students in Jammu and Kashmir

One of the biggest advantages students have today is that they are not limited to colleges in their immediate area.

A student from Srinagar, Anantnag, Baramulla, Kupwara, Budgam, Pulwama, Ganderbal, Bandipora or any other part of J&K can apply to institutions across India, provided they meet the eligibility requirements.

At the same time, don’t overlook institutions and admission routes available within J&K.

Universities such as University of Kashmir, Central University of Kashmir, SKUAST-K, NIT Srinagar, Cluster University Srinagar and other institutions offer different courses and follow different admission processes.

The important thing is to understand the route for the specific course, rather than assuming that one exam applies to an entire university.

Before filling any application form

Check these five things:

1. Eligibility

Do you have the required Class 12 subjects?

PCB, PCM, PCMB, Commerce and Arts students can have very different options.

2. Admission route

Is admission through:

CUET? NEET? JEE? IAT? NEST? JKBOPEE? University entrance? Merit?

Never assume.

3. Subject combination

Some entrance exams allow you to choose subjects, but the university may require a particular combination for your desired course.

4. Recognition

Before paying a large fee, check whether the institution and programme are properly recognised and whether the degree is valid for the career or further study you have in mind.

5. What happens after the degree?

Look at the actual career and higher-study pathways.

A course with a modern-sounding name is not automatically a good course.

The bottom line

There is no single “best” entrance exam after Class 12.

For one student, it may be NEET. For another, JEE. For someone else, it may be CUET, JKBOPEE, SKUAST-K, IAT, NEST, CLAT, NID DAT or a university-specific admission route.

The important thing is to know what each exam is for and where it can take you.

And if you are a student from Jammu and Kashmir, don’t let the familiar NEET-JEE conversation convince you that those are the only roads available.

Choose the career first. Find the course next. Then find the entrance exam.

This guide is intended as a starting point. Admission rules, eligibility, exam dates and participating institutions can change. Always verify the latest information through the official website of the relevant examination authority or university before applying.
